Derry 1-13
Sligo 0-15
DERRY HAVE BOOKED their place in the semi-final stages of the Electric Ireland Minor Football championship, following a narrow victory over Sligo.
Red Óg Murphy led the charge for the northern side, with an incredible 11 points throughout the contest, including seven from frees.
But despite his individual brilliance, Sligo’s challenge fell just one point short of the victors.
Derry rallied back from a five-point deficit in the first half to grind out the victory, with Richie Mullen hitting a crucial goal in the 43rd minute to edge them in front.
Derry extended their lead to three points shortly after before Sligo cut the gap to just one point as the closing minutes loomed.
Paddy Quigg stepped up to kick the decisive score for Derry in injury time, and it appeared as though Oisin McWilliams added an insurance point shortly after.
His effort however was subsequently disallowed, but it had no bearing on the result as Derry secured their place in the semi-finals.
The Ulster side will now face either Clare or Dublin on 27 August.
